We all knew this day was coming, we have been screaming it for the past month and BioWare has finally caved and is announcing the news – Star Wars The Old Republic is going Free to Play. Matthew Bromberg, GM of BioWare Austin let the world know that “Players want flexibility and choice. The subscription-only model presented a major barrier for a lot of people who wanted to become part of The Old Republic™ universe,”.
Now what does that mean for player? Easy, You will have choices when playing The Old Republic. You can either use the F2P model which will give you up to level 50 access and all 8 classes with a few unstated limitations. I am guessing limited character slots, auction house, and possibly access to specific areas. Certain features of the game can be purchased with a thing called “Cartel Coins”. If you do not want to mess with the limitations you can pay your monthly subscription and get unlimited access to the game’s content.
Also noted the game is taking a drastic price cut in August down to $15. BioWare has seen a drastic drop in subscribers over the past few months and I do not blame them for scrambling to get some dollars back in their pockets.
