Well it’s Halloween time again and while everyone is reviewing their Halloweenie games. Castlevania has been done and Ghosts and Goblins, even Nightmare on Elm Street. So for mine I’ve decided to review a game featuring everyone’s favorite underwear-cladded hero….Arthur!!! Back in the day before everyone thought Capcom was the devil it seemed just about everything they came out with was solid gold. From Mega Man and Duck Tales and a little game you may have heard of Street Fighter II. So journey back with me back to a simpler time when you didn’t have to worry about downloading more stuff at a price at release date, back to the 16 bit era.
The story is basically the same Satan himself wants your girlfriend and it’s up to you to travel to the bowels of Hades to get her back. Just like most games back in the day there was little on story, but the gameplay makes up for this as it’s the journey you take and what a beastly journey it will be.
The gameplay is pretty standard platforming arcade style. Get from point A to point B without dying and kill a giant monster. This is much easier said then done. For anyone familiar with any game in the series you should expect no mercy and brutal difficulty. Most enemies follow no set pattern so it always keeps you on your toes. As mentioned before some bosses are huge and are relentless! Also did I fail to mention 2 hits and you’re dead? Granted you can find magical treasure chests hidden throughout the levels to reclaim your armor and the coveted magical armor which lets you perform a special attack. To help you along the way you have numerous weapons some are better than others. I recommend the dagger myself until you are forced to pick up another weapon.
Music and Sound:
Granted the Genesis didn’t quiet have the same music and sound capabilities that the SNES could bring us. With that said though this game still has plenty of good music and sound. The sound effects can be on the bland side at times, but with the music going you barely even notice. I am a sucker for 16-bit music though.
There have been tons and tons of releases for the Ghosts and Goblins/Ghouls and Ghosts franchise. From the Commadore 64 to even with a re-release on the Gameboy Advance and PSP. If you consider the ones I grew up with Ghosts and Goblins on the NES Ghouls and Ghosts on the Genesis and Super Ghouls and Ghosts on the SNES I would consider this incantation above average. It’s tough as nails but that doesn’t consitutute a bad game I actually enjoy the challenge myself. I would highly recommend this and what better way to celebrate Halloween then going to the depths of hell to battle the devil in your man panties?!?!
